International Stone Summit

 

On September 30 and October 01, 2015, Marmomacc will hold an „International Stone Summit.“ According to the organizers it will „bring together the main international associations in the natural stone sector and an equal number of trade press journalists from the countries taking part. The intention is to develop content and encourage discussion and debate focusing on this field.“

Jet Away

This design by Margot Krasojevic is for a private airfield in Doha, Qatar. A short stay pop-up hotel hangar that can be wheeled to different docking locations, primarily used for waiting for connecting flights, refuelling and airplane maintenance.

The hotel lounge is an extension of the private jet which enables the clients to rest/ stay for a period of 24 hours before departure. The scheme is composed of three telescopic fibreglass polymer clad shells, the exterior contains perspex encased tritium sections that glow, this contained radioactive elements are harmless and have a ten year life span without the need for external power supply. The scheme can be dismantled for easier transportation.

The ancient geography of the Mediterranean Basin was profoundly changed by the increase in sea level following the Last Glacial Maximum. This global event has led to the retreat of the coastlines, especially in lowland areas and shallow shelves, such as the Sicilian Channel. The NW sector of this shelf, known as Adventure Plateau, is studded by isolated shoals mostly composed of Late Miocene carbonate rocks and by some volcanic edifices. These shoals, until at least the Early Holocene, formed an archipelago of several islands separated by stretches of extremely shallow sea. One of these submerged features – the Pantelleria Vecchia Bank – located 60 km south of Sicily, has been extensively surveyed using geophysical and geological methods. It is composed of two main shoals, connected seaward by a rectilinear ridge which encloses an embayment. Here we present morphological evidence...

The Hall of Emperors

 

Immortales: The Hall of Emperors of the Capitoline Museums, Rome“ brings to the United States for the first time a selection of 20 busts from the collection of the world’s oldest museum, the Capitoline in Rome.
The exhibition, which is on display through December 06 at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus, offers a survey of Roman portraiture from the age of Augustus (1st century, B.C.) to the late Roman Empire (5th century, A.D.).

The topic is moving towards the next step: a conference titled „Non-agricultural Geographical Indications (GIs): enhancing and protecting EU know-how“ will be held in the European Parliament in Brussels on October 1st, 2015 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Member of the Parliament Virginie Rozière will bring together experts from all over Europe to create a strong movement before the topic will be voted by the Parliament and this vote will be presented to the European Commission.
Initiators of the conference are also parliament members Ms Soledad Cabezón and Mr Nicola Danti together with Junta de Andalucía and the global alliance of Geographical Indications groups (oriGIn).

Polyphemus Monocular

This project (book+mask+fb workgroup+workshops to be done) consists of a kind of interactive tool after giants Le Corbusier, Picasso, Rembrandt, de Koonig, Stella, Johns, Calder, Chagall, Hopper and Guercino’s way to deal with their own monocular condition. Intriguingly enough, unlike monocular giant Polyphemus, they are artists.

Peter Becker is writing, that from time to time, material used by mankind for eons, finds new implementation thanks to advanced technology. After centuries of subjecting stone to hammer and chisel, the material is now facing a whole new world of uses thanks to computer controlled (CNC) machinery, diamond saws and water-jet cutting tools. Demand for Countertops

Demand for countertops in the US is forecast to increase 4.2 percent per year to 810 million square feet in 2019, valued at $29.3 billion. Growth will be propelled by a rebound in new building construction activity as well as increased spending on improvement and repair of existing structures. Value gains will also receive a boost due to a shift in the product mix from laminates to higher priced alternative materials. The health of the residential market is critical to the countertop industry as it typically accounts for about four-fifths of countertop demand. These and other trends are presented in Countertops, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.
