Advances in Architectural Geometry

Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial form-finding stages to the final construction. Modern geometric computing provides a variety of tools for the efficient design, analysis, and manufacturing of complex shapes.

an Aesthetic Library

The new information centre and library aims to be the central representative identification point in the overall context of the Georg-Simon-Ohm-Hochschule. Both, a high degree of aesthetics as well as the functionality of the building play a major role while reflecting the spirit of this supra-regional institution. The centre‘s programme covers a library including an open reading area, individual working spaces and several seminar and meeting facilities.

indian Architectrure

Following the long tradition of exquisite Indian Architecture, architects from Dubai based WS Atkins aimed to design a building that would stand as a landmark structure for Mumbai – Namaste Tower represents burgeoning economic and cultural significance of great India. This 62-story, 300m high, newest addition to W Hotel franchise, currently under construction, will include a hotel, office and retail space. The very form of the building is inspired by traditional Indian greeting of “Namaste”, where the hands are clasped together. Reflecting ancient Indian expression, position of two hotel wings represents ultimate symbol of hospitality, welcoming its guests.

Living Algorithms

The ProtoHouse project was initially developed by Softkill Design, in the Architectural Association School‘s Design Research Lab within the ‘behavioral matter’ studio of Robert Stuart-Smith. It investigated the architectural potential of the latest Selective Laser Sintering technologies, testing the boundaries of large scale 3D printing by designing with computer algorithms that micro-organize the printed material itself. Softkill is now announcing plans for the first actually printed plastic dwelling, which would be assembled in one day.

an Immigrant Granite

Granite was first mined in Vermont in the late 1700s.  Starting around the early 1800s, demand for granite began to increase.  Robert Parker, a veteran of Bunker Hill and the War of 1812, is given credit for beginning commercial production of high-grade granite.  As this demand grew, and granite began to be used for monuments and memorials, immigrants from Europe’s stone centers, particularly Italy, Scotland, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, and Germany, were drawn to Vermont...

renewable Materials

Chromatic Energy Landscape, a land art proposal by Barker Freeman Design Office for Dubai, UAE, generates a spatially and chromatically variegated landscape that engages, protects, and seeks to restore the natural biodiversity of native plants and animals. The proposal is organized as layered fields of photoresponsive energy generation systems that are also iridescent, phosphorescent surfaces intersected by a system of viewing platforms. Local renewable materials–native algae and vegetation, recycled glass and low-tech methods of construction– reshape the existing site into a colorful textured landscape.

a Piece of Geometry

A pioneering advocate of "bioclimatic" environmental design. Advancing the cause of humanity itself. Being an architect should be "a preoccupation that should engulf your body and soul for the rest of your life," because "Architecture is, in the final account, all about life itself." And, a marble, is an architecture of the geology, of earth. Of our land. That is what we call a Piece of Greece.

suggest FUTURE

The Architecture Students Network (TheASN) are organising a Forum for students to have the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions to a panel of influential speakers as to how architectural education can change and bridge the gap between academia and practice. How will our future architects be taught?

Exploring the Residual Landscape

Nature transformed through industry is a predominant theme in my work. I set course to intersect with a contemporary view of the great ages of man; from stone, to minerals, oil, transportation, silicon, and so on. To make these ideas visible I search for subjects that are rich in detail and scale yet open in their meaning. Recycling yards, mine tailings, quarries and refineries are all places that are outside of our normal experience, yet we partake of their output on a daily basis.
These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire - a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times.

Play of Lights in Stone Tower

The inner tower is comprised of a steel construction with two translucent stone sides. The wider sides are clad with stone. Architect César Pérez Becerril meant the construction to symbolize independence and progress. The stone is translucent allowing thousands of LED light sources behind the plates to set the construction a-glow...

Vast Economies of Materials

As an architectural problematic, the pursuit of this project by Fernando Herrera is to de-compose things/ objects legible to the organization of human meaning or program in the many-folded relations that cause objects to index and constitute vast economies of material formation, and which in turn allows them to emerge as tangible, concrete wordly facts.
