the Magical Legend of the Mayan Serpent God

Grand Cancun designed by Richard’s Architecture + Design will be the world’s first luxury eco-tourism resort that responds to our energy crisis and local fossil fuel dependency of the city. This is a vision for the year 2020 where Cancun will celebrate its 50th founding anniversary, a landmark or a memorial sculpture which is adapted from “KUKULKAN” and the magical legend of the Mayan Serpent God. This awesome eco-architecture contributes to the myth and raises the serpent from water to infinity, a great representation of exceptional harmony between Mayan people and their new metropolis.

Folded Ocean

It investigates how oceanic practices and protocols fold into spatial and architectural products on land, figuring both sea and land based logics. The Curved Universe of Einstein

...I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves. The curves that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuousness of its rivers, in the waves of the ocean, and on the body of the beloved woman. Curves make up the entire Universe, the curved Universe of Einstein...Oscar Niemeyer

a World without People

And yet everything ends up being an image. Even if architects dislike images and try to stage “real” events or situations, images remain the fundamental medium through which these events are transmitted. Instead of trying to go beyond images, perhaps it would be more interesting to understand them not as mere illustrations, but as a form of production. Within architecture the production of images transcends the distinction between “virtual” and “real” spaces.http://thecityasaproject.org/2012/09/manet-images-for-a-world-without-people/

1960's The Avant Garde

ARCHIGRAM dominated the architectural avant garde in the 1960s and early 1970s with its playful, pop-inspired visions of a technocratic future after its formation in 1961 by a group of young London architects – Warren Chalk, Peter Cook, Dennis Crompton, David Greene, Ron Herron and Michael Webb.
“A new generation of architecture must arise with forms and spaces which seems to reject the precepts of ‘Modern’ yet in fact retains those precepts. We have chosen to by pass the decaying Bauhaus image which is an insult to functionalism. You can roll out steel – any length. You can blow up a balloon – any size. You can mould plastic – any shape. Blokes that built the Forth Bridge – they didn’t worry.”http://designmuseum.org/design/archigram

a Cubic House

The Ambivalent Object_433 Cupid House by Ryan Hong is an exploration in curtain as poche, organizational hierarchy, tectonic continuity and the exterior’s variable presence or “exterior blackness”.
The floor plate of this house is not a direct offset of the exterior but constrained by its exterior while asserting its own proportion and scale within its given boundaries. Similar to that of a curtain’s estrangement to a fixed position, vector stippling –a drawing technique – communicates ambivalence as it lacks the commitment of a solid line.

We are drawn by desire...

Nature transformed through industry is a predominant theme in my work. I set course to intersect with a contemporary view of the great ages of man; from stone, to minerals, oil, transportation, silicon, and so on. To make these ideas visible I search for subjects that are rich in detail and scale yet open in their meaning. Recycling yards, mine tailings, quarries and refineries are all places that are outside of our normal experience, yet we partake of their output on a daily basis.
These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire - a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times.

Alabasters...

The materials commercially known as Onyx are scientifically known as alabasters (or calcium alabasters) formed by deposits of calcium carbonate in water rich in bicarbonate, generally in cavities in solids of limestone stone. (...)
The term onyx (which came from the Greek term which means “nail”) refers to two different types of rocks: the first is calcium onyx, object of the current article, and the second is a crypto-crystalline variety of quartz. (...)
Both technical as well as aesthetic characteristics vary as a function of the direction of cutting: parallel to the level of stratification (transversal cut), this way a circular design is seen over a layer, or perpendicular (cut following the direction of the veins), in this case the sedimentary stratification is highlighted. (...) Currently the transversal cut prevails, because with this cut the characteristic of translucency is highlighted.

Ancient Gangsaws

It is so easy for us to think that the machinery used for cutting stone in the industry are all modern inventions, and as for how stone was cut and processed in the distant past, ah, well, who cares ?... Some simple contraption, of course, would be a generalised assumption.
How wrong! In 2005 gangsaws, similar to those used today, were discovered in Turkey. It is estimated they date between 200 to 300 AC. The first one was discovered in Hierapolis, and the second in Ephesus, where a marble factory was discovered among the ruins.
The marble workshop in Ephesus was situated in the middle of a prosperous neighborhood in a city founded around 1000 B.C. The age of gangsaw discovered in Ephesus, is estimated to be between 600 to 700 AC. It was assumed the remains were of a large marble factory because several cut stones were found nearby. (A third machine was found in Grese (Jordan) and its age is estimated to be around 600 to 700 AC).

a Building like a Quarry

Natural stone is often the material of choice for façades. But designing a building’s front to look like a quarry – now that is quite unusual.
But that is just what architect Max Dudler did when creating Essen’s Folkwang Public Library Complex in the heart of Germany’s Ruhr Region. Unusual, too, that a photographer was invited to help design the façade: Stefan Müller, usually called on to capture Dudler’s creations in photo format, was sent on a field trip to Trosselfels-Quarries of Hofmann Natural Stone Company.

Inspiration for Marbles

In 1853, on one of his European tours, Stephen Salisbury II (1798-1884)- father of the Museum's founder- visited the American neoclassical sculptor Thomas Crawford at his studio in Rome. Crawford, who had lived in Rome for almost twenty years, welcomed many American tourists. His reputation in the United States, and especially in New England, was greatly enhanced by the exhibition in Boston in 1844 of his sculpture Orpheus, which had been inspired by the renowned Apollo Belvedere, a centerpiece of the Vatican's rich collections of ancient art.

Lately in Greece, the debate regarding the state-owned property has been intensified. In the case of buildings, many of them are unfortunately in poor condition due to lack of maintenance or complete abandonment. On the other hand as a result of the economic crisis, a large number of citizens are at risk of poverty, while the number of homeless people, especially in large urban centers, has increased dramatically according to recent statistics.

The initial research started with a general concern about poor development of building systems over time which has huge impact on human comfort and its relation to architectural form. The authors advocate that the buildings can be seen as a layering of architectural design and structural support, similar to skin and bones. However, the systems that allow for human comfort act as mediators between interior and exterior operate like grey matter which lacks real interaction with the design and architecture.http://www.evolo.us/architecture/life-aquatech-investigating-biological-systems-and-current-practices-in-the-building-sector/

Essays on Contemporary Architects

Jeffrey Kipnis’s writing, thinking, and teaching casts architecture as both an intellectual discourse and a lived, affective experience. His essays on contemporary architects are less about making critical judgments than about explication, exegesis, and provocation. In these eleven essays, written between 1990 and 2008, he considers projects, concepts, and buildings by some of the most recognized architects working today, with special attention to the productions of affect. He explores “intuition” in the work of Morphosis, “exhilaration” in Coop Himmelb(l)au, “freedom” in the work of Rem Koolhaas and OMA, “magic” in Steven Holl’s buildings, and “anxiety” in Rafael Moneo’s writing about contemporary architecture. Kipnis’s deft integration of art, critical theory, philosophy, pop culture, classical music, and science...

War-damaged cities & Architecture

The aim of the essay, is to attempt to address the reconstruction prospects forced upon us by the destruction of a city particularly after a war catastrophe. Furthermore, it is not aimed at proposing the reconstruction of particular buildings but try and find deriving guiding principles. The essay will be focused and based on theories of Lebbeus Woods as a guidance of how to behave into these conditions. Through his experimental ideas about architecture and his visionary drawings in identifiable locations destroyed by war. Moreover how to basically deal and behave into war-damaged cities and create Architecture through them.

an Impressive Skyline

Jean Nouvel designed quite an impressive addition to the skyline of gulf city Doha, Qatar. In his own manner, French architect created the Burj Doha as bold and elaborate and this iconic cylindrical form, a continuation of what has started with Torre Agbar, culminates in an elegant dome. The tower is completed last year and includes 46 floors above ground as well as 3 floors above. The high-rise aims to express the local culture, connecting contemporary and very modern aspirations with ancient Islamic designs.

Classic Red embellished the Verona Arena...

There are seven principal industrial districts in which most of the Italian marble industry is concentrated. The most important in terms of size is certainly that of the Valpolicella, in the province of Verona. It consists of over 500 companies dedicated to the extraction and working of several Italian marbles that are among the most appreciated in the world for the countless colour tones they offer: from the classic red that has embellished the Verona Arena for twenty centuries, to the black of Rovere, to the yellows and pinks of the Lessinia. These are materials that are mostly destined for decoration or thin wall-coverings, for total annual sales of over 2 billion Euro, with 20% earned on foreign markets.http://www.italtrade.com/focus/5603.htm

First Steps of Mankind

The first cultural steps of mankind are reflected in a material which is unique in its natural consistency, its variety and its durability: dimension stone. Whether one looks at the first cave paintings, the pyramids built in the 3rd millennium B.C., Roman palaces and statues or the skyscrapers of the next millennium, dimension stone continues to play a leading and enriching role in our lives.

Lapis, my dear!

Lapis lazuli (sometimes abbreviated to lapis) is a deep blue semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color.
Lapis lazuli was being mined in the Sar-i Sang mines and in other mines in the Badakhshan province in northeast Afghanistan as early as the 7th millennium BC, Lapis beads have been found at neolithic burials in Mehrgarh, the Caucasus, and even as far from Afghanistan as Mauritania. It was used for the eyebrows on the funeral mask of King Tutankhamun (1341–1323 BC).

The vivid construction of Orchideorama by Plan B Architects + JPRCR Architects, bridges the gap between the architecture and living organisms, the artificial and man-made and the nature. a Minaret Telecommunication

RTA Office’s design for Telecommunication Tower for Istanbul is left to the citizens and to their free interpretation – the form suggests it could be a minaret sculpted by the wind or a twenty-first century lighthouse or none of the above. However, architects at RTA office strongly believe that the success of the idea depends on the way the designers understand the site. Therefore their proposal comes as a response to this very specific and strategically important point which bridges the gap between Europe and Asia, merging cultures and continents.

Earth and Stones in Dust

(September 2013) 65 million years ago, the Earth was ravaged by tsunamis, a huge dust cloud darkened the skies and acid rain fell on plants and animals. These events marked the latest mass extinction and the creeping end for more than 50 percent of all species on Earth. Not even the dinosaurs would survive this apocalypse. These events were most likely caused by an asteroid approximately 10 kilometers across that impacted the Earth in the area of today’s Gulf of Mexico, scarring the planet’s surface with a crater over 170 kilometers wide.

Metastable Architecture

Mariusz G. Polski MSc. Arch. of Delft University of Technology defines metastability as a term which describes the extended duration of certain equilibria acquired by a complex system when leaving its most stable state aIer an external action.
Considering the contemporary technological levels and multiple scientific insights into natural systems that reflect metastable tendencies, it is not hard to imagine an open ended architectural design that across its life span reveals metastable qualities. It is a design that incorporates contemporary tools as a communication medium with the cultural environment and assumes uncertainty to be a planed and valuable part of the process, producing architecture that facilitates environmental feedback and drive its evolution towards internal and external homeostasis.

I entered the grandpa's old factory alone...

I entered the grandpa's old factory alone.
All the old machines were in place. All the belts likewise. The cotton on the walls still stuck on the stone. High in the sky the trapdoor let a sunray shine through a hole of the roof. I am alone in the dark corridor of the factory and I am walking past the old machinery. I am measuring the dimensions of the narrow corridors just as I  used to do when I was a child. Grandpa was holding me by the hand and blocking my free access somewhere...."no that way! Are you listening to me? this way! Are  you listening to me? And never go alone!".... I hear his voice in my ears mixed with the non-stopping noise of the machines.

Sculptural Water Forms

Trifold Madang is an entry for the Busan Opera House competition, by IwamotoScott Architecture, which addresses the sponsors’ aim to create a new icon of the North Port area, establishing an international gateway while fostering maritime tourism for the new Maritime Culture District. Their design tries to significantly dramatize the experience of going to the opera. The sculptural form at the water edge maximizes the connection between the city, the water and the surrounding landscape.

619 Data Center Facilities

The “data center city” project designed by SO/AP was produced for the Unbuilt Vision competition, and was presented for Design Week at the University Art Museum of Louisiana.
The concept tries to analyze the physical impact of NTICs on our territory and especially our relationship to the city. Today there are nearly 619 data center facilities in 33 countries in the world. These places generate a new geography of virtual media. As a new territo

The Story of Mankind

...For us marble workers, we take this so much for granted that we even sometimes forget this,
but we must not forget how the material we work with is perceived by the observer, by the person who uses it and wears it down stone is the noble material par excellence. But this is because it deserves to be, since it has accompanied mankind in his long history.

Stone has earned its nobility, because within it lies the story of mankind, along with its own.

House in Monasterios

The house is located in an elevated area, from which it dominates a hillside leading down to the sea. This view marks the direction the walls will take and, in an abstract form, define the project.
The house is structured as a compaction of volumes of varying heights, and the form established by the main walls.
The articulating space volume of this sequence is obtained from opening courts and patios in the central space of the house. A series of open courtyards are formed, covered in its perimeter like an atrium, in search of the access to the house, obtaining different perceptions of the house.

Contemporary Cinema

Designed by Amir Mikhaeil, the new Center for Contemporary Cinema, situated on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Virgil Avenue in Los Angeles, is neither a multiplex nor a museum – it aims to be a new manifold for projection of film and new media within the city. This inspiring design, awarded H.I.Feldman Prize at Yale, has its roots in Tarkovsky’s representation of time in cinema and the Deleuzian conception of the time-image which is not reliant on the linear progression of movement through film, therefore the project disrupts the continuous urban narrative structure of the boulevard.

Environmental Perspectives

In the past 15-20 years, the business of quarrying has improved enormously from an environmental perspective. Domestic quarries today are required to comply with strict guidelines and are monitored by MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) among others.

Stone has always existed...

One of the things my father taught me,
and which he repeated to me constantly, was:
“Stone has always existed,
man has always used it and shall never cease to use it.”
I believe this is true, despite the fact that the latest-generation materials
leads us to believe that a durable material
should have an unvarying long life.
Why do I believe this? History proves this.

Eternal Learning

In addition to visiting the many stone events on the “Spring Trade Show Circuit” so far this year — Las Vegas, Brazil, Atlanta, etc. — I took some time last month to travel to Salt Lake City, UT, for the Utah Stone Summit, which is an edition of the Marble Institute of America/Stone World Industry Education Series. I hadn’t attended one of these since last fall, so it was time to see what was new. The answer was simple: everything. These events are not simply a matter of sitting through a presentation, but rather, they are an interactive series where fabricators of all sizes and experience levels network and learn from one another. As such, each event offers a completely new experience for attendees.

The Eternal Curve of Human Wants

"Architecture is the simplest way of articulating the relation between space and time, to organize reality, to realize dreams, to achieve not only formal expressions of a temporal beauty, but a regulation that is engraved in the eternal curve of human wants and the achievements on the route to their realization" Guy Debord, Ιnternationalle Situationniste, The Overcome of Art, Documents before the establishing of S.I., G.Ioannidis (transl), Ypsilon, Athens, 1999
