History and Memory

The lost spaces competition is a call for ideas to reframe how underused spaces in Calgary might be used. The aim is to address a particular challenge of public space – what to do with seemingly remnant pieces of public property. The challenge: what opportunities do lost spaces afford?

Lost. Like a Stone Shoe searching...

Of Belarus origin, Radevich was born into a family of shoes designers; as a result, she grew up ‘‘surrounded by creative ideas and the smell of leathers,’’ as she herself says. Before starting her own brand, she spent a few years working at the creative studios of Alexander McQueen and Nicholas Kirkwood, an experience which allowed her to hone her technical skills and deepen her understanding of shoe design. The Equestrian Center

The project is about the design of a section of the coastline of eastern Thessaloniki and specifically in Mikra in Kalamaria. The site of interest is a section of the waterfront with an area of 130 acres, located at the node between the city and its future extension. It is bounded by construction and natural elements that define its nature and existence. The access in the area is from the waterfront promenade and smaller roads vertical to it, both of which form part of the orthogonal city plan. The vegetation in the area is dense with large green areas.

an Eye Catching poster

Archinect’s Get Lectured series has shone the spotlight on numerous lecture posters from architecture schools and departments throughout the U.S., and a few outside the States, since late 2013. During this past fall semester, I reached out to some of our previously featured Get Lectured schools to give a brief rundown of how their most recent posters came to be.

The Area

An inactive quarry, a former dump, a sanctuary of the wildlife and three archaeological sites (Strofylas, Zagora, Stavropeda) form the identity of the intervention area. We identified the boundaries of the site which can be segregated into natural and anthropogenic ones.
The sea, the hills and the space between them are the visible physical boundaries of the area, while the settlements, the roads, the dry-stone walls, the quarry and the dump are the anthropogenic ones. A boundary, visible from most parts of the study area, is the sea, which also provides a system of orientation, while the wildlife refuge is a specified, but not visible, area.

Beauty made of...

...When God spread his treasures over the Earth, as she translates the Company’s catalogue, he was filled with grace and generosity toward the Orda Region. All along the river Iren, along a length of but a few kilometers, he deposited rich reserves of honey-colored Selenite and within a stone’s throw, deposits of Anhydrite and soapstone...

to Show your Work, Sculptors, Artists

Today there are many opportunities for artists to show and share their work – you just need to be creative! Before you embark on choosing a venue to show your work you need to answer one simple question – “Is my customer likely to visit the venue either in the real or virtual worlds?”
When you talk to a person on the street and tell them you are an artist, one of the questions that they will likely ask is, “What gallery is your work in?” Being in a gallery is a large part of many artists marketing efforts and for some it says, “I have arrived”.
