a sustainable material

In the decade of the eighties the concept of Sustainable Development was born defined as “that development which satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations to satisfy their own needs”. Sustainable development is not an exclusively ecological concept, it can be assimilated as a equilateral triangle, the central area of which would represent the area of equilibrium between the social, economic and environmental component.

to Architect a Snowflake

Ice Crystal designed by Virginia Melnyk arrives from a series of aggregations and adjustments inspired by the way that snowflakes and ice crystals are formed. Using computational design to generate growth cycles and manually manipulating outputs for desired proportions and organization, the structure arises from the assembled tetrahedrons. Each of the different generations which combine to shape the pavilion built on top of one another ...

World Countertop Demand

Global demand for countertops is forecast to rise 4,2 percent per year to 503 million square meters in 2018. Demand for countertops will benefit from improved building construction activity throughout much of the world. Gains will also stem from continued efforts to expand and modernize the building stock in developing areas that are constructing large numbers of housing units and nonresidential structures to accommodate the needs of their growing populations.

Istanbul Harbor

The rapid population increase of the city in the past 10-20 years has resulted in a huge waste of public spaces. Given that Istanbul is going to expect a heavy earthquake whitin the next 25 years, those public spaces could be a place of refuge. Due to fast growth and expantion of the city, the transportation system has been disregarded and important transport nodal points are just now being built. Our goal was it to show with this project a possibilty or rather an idea of how a revitalisation and an upgrading of a harbour area in this part of Istanbul could take place or look like.

Iberian Peninsula’s famous „hórreos”

Natural stone plays a decisive role in Ourense University’s new kindergarten in Spain’s province of Galicia, even if most of it is hidden from plain view: slate covers the flat-roof and, the complex itself, in its shoe-box simplicity, picks up on the Iberian Peninsula’s famous „hórreos”.

Holographic Film

The Fresnel Trimaran designed by Margot Krasojević has a folding wingsail for a better lift to drag ratio, the sail’s frame is a built up mechanical structure similar to an airplane wing constructed from carbon fibre with a retractable Kevlar sail covered in aero-nautical film. The sail rotates around the mast and has a series of motorised creases which catch the wind, the wingsail is actuated by motors that control these movements using solar cells and wind energy...

Kaleidoscopic Effect

Experimental project SYMMETRYSCOPE tryes get to the bottom of symmetry and reveal its possibilities. At first step the liner symmetry was investigated and several columns were made. The principle consisted in the rotation and mirroring geometrically simple shapes (tetrahedron). However, the geometry of the column did not allow any internal spaces and so were unusable for architectural purposes. Another move forward was done by the planar symmetry. The principle was similar to the columns. The effort was to achieve interior spaces.

Almost unfathomable...

Should the beholder have a sense of déjà-vu when contemplating the Collection „Palais“ (Palace) by French designer Pierre Gonalons, he might be surprised to find the reason when taking the train from Paris to Versailles. In the Trianon of the Palace Gardens he will find walls dating back to Luis XIV made of the same marble and bearing the same ornaments.

Detroit retains a deep sense of place

Detroit holds an important place in history.  Its rise, collapse, decades long struggles, and current rebirth have created a potentially unique microclimate for exploring examples of “anything goes” thinking when it comes to the challenges of inclusive education.

Piano Paesaggistico

Talk is of the landscaping plan for regional development. Such plans are in place all over Italy. But quarrelling has erupted over the issue in the District of Versilia. The area in the southern region of the Apuan Alps includes such towns as Stazzema, Seravezza and Vagli in the mountains but also Pietrasanta on the coast.
The regional government seated in Florence claims to plan a sustainable development of the area with a view toward e.g.: tourism. The focus of the heated debate is the Parco delle Alpi Apuane, a natural reserve in the mountains, in which marble has been quarried for generations...

to Become an Inspiration

There are ideas that arise from the need of a particular moment. Such a need – another hot day of summer spent in the office and a thought “if only I could go for a walk” – became inspiration for a project of a path suspended in the air, a balcony Walk-on. It is also one of the ideas to change a sad courtyard, that we overlook every day out of the office windows on the 3rd floor, to give the courtyard a bit of magic.
