Marble Creations

Ulian and Batti aimed to create pieces that were functional but also beautiful seen for example through the PiùOmeno table lamp which has been made by cutting a tile into pieces and then assembling these pieces using simple joints. Highly practical as well as sophisticated because of the minimalism and function of the design, the light can be adjusted by simply by tilting the shade backwards and forwards...

Production of natural stone was up by 7% per year

Dr. Carlo Montani’s statistical yearbook for the stone branch appeared in its 25th edition this year. And, as always, the humble master of numbers had a pleasant flash-back at hand: Turn-over of natural stone has been on the increase continuously world-wide for the last two and a half decades, as has been stone consumption beating even the average rate of economic growth.
Despite the recession during the 2008/2009 crisis one could say, stone is not merely a material with a long life span. It is a sure investment in times of economic uncertainty – at least the branch seems to know how to negotiate the times of crisis. This is particularly interesting considering that all the companies involved are small or medium-sized enterprises. There is no natural-stone-„Industry“ with companies employing a staff of 1000 or more anywhere in the world.

A new MoMA exhibit proposes informal solutions for large cities

Rapid urbanization is stratifying the world’s largest metropolises spatially and socioeconomically, creating segregated clusters of wealth and poverty. An exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York that opens on Nov. 22 addresses the impact of that expansion in a selection of megacities—Hong Kong, Istanbul, Lagos, in Nigeria, Mumbai, in India, New York, and Rio de Janeiro—with the goal of better understanding architects' roles there.

the skewed perspective of artists...

Written by North American choreographer Andrew Simonet as a guide for all arts professionals, I found this book to be applicable to my own practice within a very different geography and medium – in fact, this publication would hold value even for those not placed within the art world. An essay of succinct, direct and digestible information, it reframes artists’ practice in society, and thus what artists, funders, and society should expect from their work as both a single and collective force.

It is an interrogation of our primary field of architecture through the lens of computing, and yet one that realizes a productive expanding of our métier’s definition and boundaries. the optical Fygon and the prominence Position

The "chora" of Astypalea is built on a hill and the traditional settlement bears strongly characteristics of the Cycladic civilization. In the neck of the hill the eight conserved windmills form the dividing line between the historic and the modern settlement and on the top of the hill stands the venetian castle. On the island are scattered, throughout its extent,  archaeological discoveries that cover a variety of prehistoric / Mycenaean until the Middle Ages.

Innate Rock Beauty

Stone is a natural solid formation of one or many minerals. There are thousands of types of stone that have been quarried through the centuries. The familiar stone types that are used today are identified through four categories: SEDIMENTARY, METAMORPHIC, IGNEOUS STONE, and MAN-MADE.
SEDIMENTARY stone came from organic elements such as glaciers, rivers, wind, oceans, and plants. Tiny sedimentary pieces broke off from these elements and accumulated to form rock beds. They were bonded through millions of years of heat and pressure.

Quarries...an organic architecture

The concept of the landscape as architecture has become, for me, an act of imagination. I remember looking at buildings made of stone, and thinking, there has to be an interesting landscape somewhere out there because these stones had to have been taken out of the quarry one block at a time...

One Sun /34 Moons

The first of the five “lenses” forms a bright and transparent lobby, with café, art library and bookstore, inviting the public into the Museum and encouraging movement via ramps toward the galleries as they progress downward into the garden. From the lobby a new cross-axis connects through to the original building’s grand spaces. At night the glowing glass volume of the lobby provides an inviting transparency, drawing visitors to events and activities.
