Selling Stones

There was a man who lived by the side of the road and sold stone. He was hard of hearing, so he
had no radio. He had troubles with his eyes, so he read no newspapers. But he sold good stone. He
put up signs on the highway telling “How good THE STONE was.” He stood by the side of the
road and cried: “Buy stone.” And people bought! He increased his stone orders. He bought more
equipment to take care of this trade.
He finally got his son home from college to help him out. But then something happened. His son
said, “Father, haven’t you been listening to the radio? Haven’t you been reading the newspapers?
There’s a big depression. The European situation is terrible. The domestic situation is worse.”
Whereupon the father thought, “Well, my son has been to college, he reads the papers and listens
to the radio, and he ought to know.” So the father cut down on his stone orders, took down his
advertising signs, and no longer bothered to stand on the highway to sell his stone. And his stone
sales fell almost overnight.
“You’re right, son,” the father said, “We certainly are in the middle of a great depression.”

IL CAPO

“Marble quarries are places so unbelievable and striking, they almost feel like they are big theaters or sets,” says Yuri Ancarani, the filmmaker behind today’s excerpt from the documentary, Il Capo (The Chief), which follows a quarry boss as he guides his men through the extraction process, using a silent language of gesture and sign.

Ancarani was captivated by the otherworldly landscapes of the quarry. He spent nearly a year filming on Monte Bettolgi, in the Carrara region of the Apuan Alps, in Northwest Italy, eventually deciding to focus his film on the hypnotic, and rather dramatic moment when the monumental marble blocks are freed from the mountainside, and fall to the ground with an earth-shattering thud.

Solid Materials

Though it might not be immediately apparent, the type of surface material you use is vital to the longevity (or lack thereof) of an outdoor area or commercial surface. You’re sure to notice it in just a few short years when you begin to see chipping, scratches, or fading. Quality surface materials should last much longer than that—and, let’s be honest, be more aesthetically appealing than some of the industrial grade surfaces on the market. When it comes to choosing the right surface for a commercial application or outdoor setting, consider all the factors that may affect its performance. Here are some things to keep in mind when purchasing a countertop material.

Nature...

Plants tend to conjure the picture of green leaves and fragrant blossoms. French sculptor Elsa Magrey breaks with these expectations: she depicts the leaves only and what’s more: usually in dark slate.

The “color dips”

The proposal for a New MASP in São Paulo, a project made by Oscar Abrahamsson at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is suggesting a new home for Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil. It is an exploration in explicit shape, décor and adornment and new ideas of the urban ground in creating a museum that lowers the threshold between culture and life in the street.

unique experience of space and beyond

The design of the new Viewpoint on the Pulpit Rock in Norway, is an attempt to combine art with architecture. Based on the famous painting “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali, fly Architecture wanted to take the surrealistic melting clocks as a template for the design of the new observation deck. A part of the rock is carved out to give the impression of a giant eye. In this cavity, a grandstand is provided with stairs and around it an aluminum/glass structure is stretched. This glass roof with the underlying grandstand, invites visitors to linger both in sunny and rainy weather.

Sitting...

Fabric Chair. This project is an investigation on the use of fabric as a structural material in furniture design. A special resin was developed to harden fabric placed on a rigid mold. The resin hardens the fabric to become structural while retaining its softness in specific locations.
