The ancient staute was located in the middle of the old town, on a podium, with its legs closed. The project doesn’t want to present again a copy of the original structure, 4o meters tall, made of bronze, but to make the visitor shiver and feel the same identical emotions that his ancestors felt looking at it for the first time, more than 2200 years ago. To recrate those feelings, the structure must be unique and original. The project considers a brand new position, not in the middle of the city, but outside its walls, as a new voice, a new point of reference for the ships at night time. The construction will exploit the most recent technologies, employing energy from renewable sources and “intelligent systems” to prevent the consequences of earthquakes and wind forces, providing reliability and flexibility. The structure will be completely sustainable, with a hughe contribution in preventing pollution. The external surface will be entirely covered with solar panels, thus being one of the first buildings of its kind, a technological achievement of our times.

Aequorea

Hi People of the Land,

My name is Océane. I'm 15 years old. I'm an aquanaut teen. I was born in immersion in 2050 in an underwater farm called "Aequorea" off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Bio-inspired, the farm draws its name from a bioluminescent, light-emitting jellyfish characterized by its articulated, webbed tentacles. These tentacles enable it to swim and ensure its stability, while producing its own energy.

Architects and designers are busy developing new ideas for the upwardly mobile in stone, e.g. stone steps

„Lithic Vertigo“ was the title one of the Marmomacc 2015’s „Italian Stone Theatre“-presentations. The stage was set for architects and designers in the process of reaching upward – a constant challenge. Natural stone is ideal for the job: every era has its typical and representative stairwells.

architectural education philosophy

This project aims to find a methodology for the creation of contemporary architecture within an existing traditional settlement. Key component is everything new to emerge from the existing structures, change according to its needs and transform the old, forming an organic relationship between them.
As a settlement example was chosen the area of Moutallo's in the city of Paphos and in which the construction of an architectural school is been proposed. Moutallo's was the Turkish Cypriot city district and has a long history that starts from the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans in 1951 AD. Through a turbulent history culminated by the Turkish invasion in 1974, was abandoned by the Turkish Cypriots and was finally inhabited by Greek Cypriot refugees.

Contemporary Archetypes

In Lloyd Alter’s preface in the book [ours] Hyperlocalization of Architecture he quotes Christopher Alexander, “When you building a thing you cannot merely build that thing in isolation, but must repair the world around it, and within it. So that the larger world at that one place becomes more whole.”
So begins the short film featuring author Andrew Michler who sits down with the journalist of the Dot Earth Blog Andrew Revkin at the New York Time Building, to discuss the concept and projects of hyperlocal architecture. The unscripted discussion explores how contemporary architecture responds to, and transforms, place and synthesize the needs of both people and climate. The conversation explores regions in the book exemplifying innovative design principles, ranging from the tiny homes of Tokyo, to the eclectic and kinetic architecture of Australia.

Central Park in Shamrock Condo, Lima, Peru

First of all the volcano symbolizes the soil destruction of the flowing morphology and changing the landscape into free shapes and forms. And second, the volcano expresses the fertility of natural vital elements such as water and green. The terrain itself is a structure like a flowing skin that generate from the core of the volcano. Finally it represents a "scenographic" topography with the lighting "sparkles" elements.
Furthermore the design for the park is organized in 5 layers...

“Hyper Building”

Why we still design cities by dividing the ground in urban plots and defining heights for each building? Why don’t we think our cities as a whole, planning them from the three dimensions at the same time, allowing us to define positions freely for our constructions in the space (x,y,z axes).
Let’s think and create new cities in a three dimensional development system that won’t consider the ground as the main one, and will permit to have several of them “floating” on air. That would allow the creation of new green areas on the rooftops, creating new forms of living, working, circulation… and public space relationships.

Pendant Drops

Mimicking the process of sacred behavioural patterns in religious rituals, the Sikh Temple designed by Maria Esteban Casañas at the Bartlett School of Architecture, proposes a syncretic model of architecture that merges the poetic with the functional through ornamental formation. Originating in two-dimensional patterns, the temple emerges through volumetric transformations that morph Sikh sacred geometry into a three-dimensional inhabitable space. The existing Sikh temples are of rectangular nature, however, this proposes a new typology in which the ceremonial routines in the temple dictate its geometry, such as that of circumambulation.

a ‘bond of excellence’

Thanks to a gift by the Fondation Philanthropia, Latona’s Fountain and Parterre, two masterpieces of the gardens of Versailles, are getting a new lease of life. This exceptional restoration project has taken more than two years and has called upon a remarkable synergy of knowledge.
Created by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Latona’s Fountain is without doubt the most famous work in the gardens of Versailles with its tiered polychrome marble centrepiece, rich sculptures in lead and marble and cleverly designed water jets. Situated in the centre of Le Nôtre’s Grand Perspective, it is also the key structure in the hydraulic system of Versailles.
More than three centuries after its creation, deterioration had affected the fountain and its components. Work on the infrastructures, hydrant system and sculptures was needed urgently. Modifications had affected the structure’s overall stability with impacts on the general watertightness of the pool. Launched in 2013, the work is now complete...

the Works of Architecture

The fragmentary thoughts that follow were motivated by the realisation that the architectural criticism that is levelled today without social, political or professional cost to the critic is only minimally related to the etymology of the word criticism (kritiki).[2] The critical discourse of recent decades does not usually consist of an expression of opinion about works of architecture and architects in order to identify their positive and negative features. Equally rare is the intention to produce "documented evaluation of a work or an artist, i.e. to assess them on the basis of specific criteria."[2] On the contrary, criticism or kritikarisma, which means "the levelling of criticism with the intention of emphasising the negative aspects of the work being judged and of underestimating its positive ones"[3] - has flourished, as has utilitarian[4] commentary, which places the effectiveness or expediency of the argument above truth or a fair assessment, recalling the art of the Sophists in antiquity.[4] Thus it is natural for architectural criticism today to lean in the direction of irrationality, exaggeration, and commentary that is ignorant of history, seeking to make an impression with its rhetoric, but also with its fallacious reasoning, irony, complacency and factionalism. Deconstruction and utilitarianism provide the prevailing moral and philosophical foundations for critical discourse today, which sometimes praises or flatters and at others "pans" people, ideas and works, or treats them unjustly, reflecting the ambitions of those judging and the vested interests of the group to which they belong.

an Entrepreneurial Ambassador

General Secretariat of International Economic Relations and Development Cooperation
In a continuously changing and competitive international environment, which is characterized by the globalisation of markets, the intense international competition and the outward business orientation, the economic diplomacy is recognized as one of the most important factors in promoting national interests and Greek business activities abroad.
More specifically, the Economic Diplomacy activities of the Foreign Ministry cover, on one hand, Greece’s bilateral relations with other countries, and on the other hand the development and humanitarian support of Greece to third countries.
Using the Economic Diplomacy as a driving force, we seek to make Greek enterprises more outward-looking, to improve their international competitiveness, to exploit the comparative advantages of the Greek economy, to increase exports and attract foreign investments in our country.

the notion of a 21st century city

FREE City is an urban prototype for building new cities in emerging economies of the XXI century. Imagine a city where people in developing countries are able to contribute towards society and enjoy the liberties of urban life in a holistic economy.
FR-EE, Fernando Romero EnterprisE, proposes a new urban master plan that synthesizes three existing urban typologies: the radial city, the hexagonal connection and the urban grid. The scheme organizes the city in a radial manner, creating a hierarchical zoning strategy and allows for continuous growth in all directions. A rectangular grid is superimposed ...http://www.evolo.us/architecture/free-city-is-an-urban-prototype-for-emerging-economies-in-the-21st-century/

Geo Architecture

Two sites we visited in the Maldives, Thilafushi the trash island near Male, and a tourist island under development in South Male Atoll that will remain unnamed, are dialectically co-produced by relations between architecture and trash in complex ways. On the one hand, trash produces the conditions for the generation of architecture, and, on the other, architecture produces the conditions for the generation of trash. They are not by-products of one another, but the matrix through which each unfolds.  Architecture and trash exist in complex relations of mutual causality in which the production of trash is woven into the production of architecture and vice versa.

Marmomacc & the City

The aim of the open air exhibit was to gain inspiration from the contrast between old and new
The city is famous not only for its arena dating back to Roman times or for its stage in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Its ample implementation of pink marble throughout the city including sidewalks all marked by time is fascinating in itself.
The aim of the exhibit was stone as an important regional economic factor and to bring the Fair to the people even though it is open only to professionals.
What’s more, the exhibit is meant to provide inspiration for new use of marble by showing the contrast between modern objects and the heritage city. The Organizers hoped to provide food for thought as to the future of the city.
The exhibit was staged and sponsored by Veronafiere in cooperation with the architects of Verona and the City itself. The curator was architect Laura de Stefano.

Synthetic Nature

Synthetic Nature is a collection of prototypes born through holistic architectural design research into the genesis of form and space. The self-organization of matter, conservation of energy, equilibrium and notions of minimal complexity are concepts that drive the creative process – a symbiotic mix of design, art and science. The analogy with the molecular behavior of soap bubbles informs the research, which involves nature-inspired algorithms, mathematical relationships and geometrical constraints. Focusing on periodic minimal surfaces, the design process challenges the concepts of multi-dimensional symmetry and repetition, creating modular continuous surfaces that are infinitely expandable.

Right and wrong

Art critic and historian Irving Sandler doesn’t just write about art, he has a collection of dozens of two- and three-dimensional works by noted artists of the postwar era. For instance, there is a large-scale Joan Mitchell painting in his living room that he has pledged to donate to the Brooklyn Museum upon his death. However, he said, “I’m not a collector,” meaning that what he owns he didn’t buy. These works were gifts from artists he reviewed favorably, a few were wedding gifts. The artists had become his friends. There was “no quid pro quo, so no ethical problem, because the gifts were given after a review was published and not in order to influence what I was going to write.”

‘La condition humane’

I am deeply interested by ‘La condition humane’ (from french ‘The Human Condition’), a term coined by André Malraux in 1933. Not the book in itself, nor do I want to sublimate its thematic (which strangely is a modern problematic), but these three title words combine the whole complexity of our surrounding. The human condition — what is it? How unbelievably complex humans are.

Critical Distance, Wednesday, 11 November, 7 pm

Jacob van Rijs is to give a talk as part of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale's Critical Distance lecture series. The lecture, and following discussion with Portuguese architect, Diogo Burnay (CVDB Studio), will revolve around MVRDV's philosophy, logic and design thinking. Ever since the beginnings of MVRDV more than 20 years ago, the practice has combined a conceptual, theoretical approach, from Pig City to Grand Paris, with a focus on realising these ideas or prototypes; resulting in the recently completed Markthal in Rotterdam, Villa VPRO, Book Mountain, and many more. The lecture will cover a host of MVRDV's and design methods, with ideas orbiting around their latest book, 'MVRDV Buildings'.

Its a city, its Beer Sheva

The city of Beer Sheva, in south Israel, expresses the modernist object and the modern mortal perception. This city’s thesis, located in the desert – Arab – Mediterranean area, creates an imbalanced gap between the local native conceptual spirit and the eastern European modernist urban planning; allowing inserting “external” thesis  spatial – Mediterranean, to create a sustainable urban space, that will expresses the conceptual native properly and the complexity of the mortal appearance phenomenon. The project relates to questions regarding the dwelling space perception and the ex-territorial city space.

We are surrounded by refuse all the time. Refuse is the objects that we have literally refused, whether physically, by sending them to a different place, or mentally, by putting out of mind. The mental and physical aspects tend to be conflated. The minute an object goes into the bin, we forget it, and it ceases to exist for us. The bin is a dark hole in our map of the world, an infinite container without dimension or limit.

Modern Architecture died in St Louis, Missouri

Modern Architecture died in St Louis, Missouri on July 15, 1972 at 3.32 p.m. (or thereabouts) when the infamous Pruitt-lgoe scheme, or rather several of its slab 3 blocks, were given the final coup de grace by dynamite.”_Charles Jencks
This project designed by Giacomo Pala is an attempt of developing an investigation about the possibility of having multiple objects contradicting each-other. Instead of a single Object Ontology, this design is a “Motley Ontologies” architecture sided against all of the architectural positivisms. It is an architecture that invokes an ironic, parodic and self-parodic conception of the discipline within the Avant-Garde agenda. This kind of architecture is able to ironically take advantage of the gap between Avant-Garde aspirations and reality, so as to incorporate the concept of multiplicities in the design strategies.
