without dimension or limit

We are surrounded by refuse all the time. Refuse is the objects that we have literally refused, whether physically, by sending them to a different place, or mentally, by putting out of mind. The mental and physical aspects tend to be conflated. The minute an object goes into the bin, we forget it, and it ceases to exist for us. The bin is a dark hole in our map of the world, an infinite container without dimension or limit.

Devine Comedy Dante

Io non piangea, si’ dentro impetrai“ (I wept not, so to stone within I grew), is one of the famous quotations of Dante Alighieri’s Devine Comedy (Canto 33, 49). The reference is to the dread and horror of Hell and its hardship...

Tower of Refuge

Because of facing threat from alternation of the natural growth pattern, deterioration of the global environment and excessive harvesting of the living creatures, more and more species of animals and plants are now endangered on the Earth. How to maintain species diversity has become a crucial issue.

Stone Age

The Museum of Natural History in Boulder, Colorado shows an exhibit of over 80 stone age items found in 2008 in a backyard in the city
The discovery of stone tools from the late Pleistocene (13,000 years ago) within the city limits of Boulder in 2008 was a rare event in archaeology. A new exhibit in the University of Colorado’s Museum of Natural History in Boulder features the collection of more than 80 of these stone tools known as The Mahaffy Cache found in a backyard.

an exhibition halls like petals

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners were able to prevail against the competition in the project for Vietnam’s National Exhibition and Trade Fair Center. From nine designs by international architects such as SAMOO Architects & Engineers (Korea), Atkins (Hong Kong) and NIKKEN SEKKEI (Japan), the client, Vingroup, selected the master plan and architectural concept of the Hamburg architects, and announced the result on the 3rd of October.

like a Flower

The first building in MVRDV’s sustainble masterplan, a flower shaped landmark offering 15.000 m2 of Grade A offices, combines a strong identity with rental flexibility. The 45,000 m2 plot on the edge of Shanghai’s Honqiao airport will include a total of 9 further MVRDV-designed office buildings atop an Aedas-designed underground shopping centre, and will be completed in early 2016. Monsoon Assemblages

I heard yesterday that my research proposal ‘Monsoon Assemblages’ has been “retained for funding” for a 2015 European Research Commission Starting Grant, pending conclusion of the grant agreement with the University of Westminster. I am hugely excited about this – it will, if all goes ahead, fund two Post Docs, two Phd students, an administrator (most important!) and my M.Arch Design Studio to work with me on the South Asian urban monsoon for five years. I will be advertising for these positions next year once the agreement has been singed and the project is set up.

Modern Architecture died in St Louis, Missouri

Modern Architecture died in St Louis, Missouri on July 15, 1972 at 3.32 p.m. (or thereabouts) when the infamous Pruitt-lgoe scheme, or rather several of its slab 3 blocks, were given the final coup de grace by dynamite.”_Charles Jencks
This project designed by Giacomo Pala is an attempt of developing an investigation about the possibility of having multiple objects contradicting each-other. Instead of a single Object Ontology, this design is a “Motley Ontologies” architecture sided against all of the architectural positivisms. It is an architecture that invokes an ironic, parodic and self-parodic conception of the discipline within the Avant-Garde agenda. This kind of architecture is able to ironically take advantage of the gap between Avant-Garde aspirations and reality, so as to incorporate the concept of multiplicities in the design strategies.

Stone Ideas...

Turkish natural stone trade association Imib welcomed professional designers and students to its fourth design competition. But the organizer voiced harsh critique which he addressed at participants: Imib’s President, Ali Kahyaoğlu, stated that he was far from satisfied with the submissions. „We need drafts and prototypes that are realizable and for which there is a market… Align your dreams with reality“, freely translated.

Italian Stone Exports

The Made in Italy natural-stone sector posted growth again in the first half of 2015, as revenues increased for natural-stone materials and the machinery to process them.
Between January and June, Italian exports of marble, granite and other natural stone posted an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2014, thanks to revenues of €978.1 million from international orders. Finished and semi-finished products provided the upside with sales totalling €777 million (+7.3%), while raw materials (€201.1 million) posted a slight downturn (-2.3%).
Italian quarrying and processing machinery and technologies, meanwhile, posted double-digit growth of 28.8% in first-half 2015 with revenues of €616.1 million.

Magical Rabbits

Boston is experiencing a bold moment for public art due to many long term planning projects coming to fruition and a new political climate that favors the arts. One example is the recent installation by the Australian artist, Amanda Parer. Her five monumental inflatable rabbit sculptures titled “Intrude” appeared in late July at the newly minted outdoor space, called the Lawn on D. Located in South Boston, adjacent to the new Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, this ArtLAB is fast becoming a go to place for pop up cultural life in the heart of the city.

Discovering Lychnitis

The purpose of this educational activity was to give the students the chance to get to know and understand the importance of garnet and how it was the reason for the island's economic growth, as well as the evolution of sculpture in Paros in ancient times. Furthermore, the students may get to know the sculptures and the most famous sculptors who used the marble of Paros. The expected outcome of this program is to inform students on the history of that era through the marble of Paros, recognize its importance and try to convey the value of the existence of quarries to Greek and foreign visitors of Paros...

as Topography

The proposed house designed by Constantinos Kalisperas Architectural Studio is situated in the outer suburbs of Nicosia surrounded by the endless tranquility of the majestic agricultural terrains.
Inspired by the existing topography of the area, form and landscape interweave into one hybrid structure, allowing for multi-layered program, views and landscape to co-exist harmoniously.
