from Concept to Creation

Anyone can put paint to canvas. Anyone can move a brush around. Draw a picture. Carve a piece of wood. But put the paintbrush in the hands of a Degas or a Renoir, put the piano keys beneath the fingers of a Debussy or a Brubeck, and suddenly magic happens...

the Master Architect

Some architects have a signature style. What sets Piano apart is that he applies his coherent set of ideas in extraordinarily different ways. It takes more than a quick glance to see his touch on such individual structures as the Pompidou Center, The New York Times Building in New York, and his 72-story London Bridge Tower. Each project is a renaissance, because, as Piano himself explains: “One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again.”

Greenbuildings...

How can architects help? Get in touch. It would be interesting to do more workshops with architects who are thinking about designs, and it would be amazing to get a renowned architect—or someone who is interested—to come to India and help out on the project. We always are looking for partnerships and trying to bridge the different verticals. We’re starting to work with universities in the U.S. on thinking through design affordability. They don’t understand working on the ground, so FM and Frontier Innovations can bridge that gap and help develop that skill set.

“It’s very difficult to sell sculpture through galleries”

Without much fear of contradiction, one can say that artists want to exhibit their work and sell their work, too. When you yell into a canyon, you want to hear an echo. Getting that exhibition opportunity and making a sale, however, is rarely a given, leading artists to try alternatives.

to be a public hub

Memory and Commemoration in Beirut is a very delicate subject. Beirut witnessed ups and downs, from a devastating civil war to an exponential urban development. Architecture plays a fundamental role in shaping a city. It acts as a living organism with muscles and tissues inextricably interwoven, building a complex world.

Eiffel Tower's Newly Renovated First Floor

Since visitor levels to the tower have now reached saturation, at just under 7 million people annually, the city wanted to increase revenue by encouraging people to spend more time—and more tourist dollars—on the under-frequented first level, the largest of the Eiffel Tower’s three floors at 54,000 square feet. Commissioned by the City of Paris (the tower’s owner) and La Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE) (the tower’s operator) the €30-million ($37.8-million) makeover was realized by local architect Moatti Rivière, which has demolished and rebuilt two of the three existing pavilions, re-clad the third, and rebuilt two of the four elevator shelters.

Anagenesis

Anagenesis examines the notion of a post-industrial building envelope that engages natural phenomena as a productive force. The investigation, carried out by Hseng Tai Lintner at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, explores the interrelationship between the natural and the manufactured and focuses on the use of bioluminescence, a naturally occurring form of chemiluminescence that makes organisms like fireflies and jellyfish glow, to produce ambient lighting for the interior.

Neuroscience in Architecture

The human response to architecture is usually based on subjective emotions: I like that building, I hate this space; this room is so open, this office is oppressive. But something more nuanced is happening to elicit these responses. Neuroscientists have found that distinctive processes occur in our brains—consciously and subconsciously, cognitively and physiologically—from the moment we step into a space. These processes affect our emotions, our health, and even the development of memory.
